NHS to roll out first long-acting injection to prevent HIV
Date published: 17 October 2025
Following approval by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), a long-acting injection will be available in the coming months on the NHS for some people who cannot take HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) tablets.
The new preventative therapy, given every two months, will be provided by sexual health clinics. Around 1,000 patients per year in England who are unable to have oral PrEP are expected to benefit from this new long-lasting injection.
The injection is not currently available; final guidance is awaited from NICE before rollout can begin.
