The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) have recently reviewed the advice on how long you can use some hormonal coils.

What is new?

  • If you are using a 52mg hormonal coil (this includes Mirena, Benilexa or Levosert) for contraception, and the device was fitted when you were under the age of 45 years, you will now have effective contraception for 8 years (not 6 years).
